LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Donna Balin

Greetings!

Well it is that time of year again; depending if your cup is half full or half empty, the year is either half way over or half way beginning. In either case, I hope it has been fulfilling so far and you are achieving what you set out to do this year; if not you still have time to do so! And…there is still time to get involved with TEW. The remainder of the year will be busy and we welcome your support in any way you can give it.

Carolyn Wyly will be hosting our summer social exclusive to members. Carolyn, thank you so much for welcoming us into your home. It will be a great opportunity to get to know your fellow members, relax and have a good time.

Calling all former Women on the Move®! As you know, this is our 20th year anniversary, so we are having a special Reunion Dinner! We are putting together tables with your class and would like your participation. Please contact Margo Snider to confirm your attendance. This will be an event that you will not want to miss! The event will be held on Tuesday, September 28th at Damian’s downtown.

I know that I have mentioned this many times before - and I cannot say it enough - we have a wonderful board this year, and I would like to thank each of them for their immense contributions to TEW. Please join with me and give them a pat on the back when you see them next. I really could not have gotten through the year without them. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all at the party on July 13th!

Sincerely,

TEW MENTORING PROGRAM

School is out, so here's a great opportunity to take stock of the TEW Mentoring programs.

New TEW member, Caterina Vennitucci, has written an amazing, in-depth assessment of the impact that the programs have had. Please take a moment to read about it. You will be impressed.

How are We Doing?
An Assessment of the TEW Mentoring Programs' Impact

An important component to any project or program is the evaluation of the results of the efforts that go into the program. TEW has actively funded the mentoring programs for many years as a means of executing the organization's mission and vision:

• To inspire women and girls to achieve their goals and give back to the community.

• To support programs that recognize, develop, and fund the advancement of women and girls in the community.

The purpose of the present article is to provide an objective assessment of how the programs impact the population of young ladies we serve. First, we provide a brief history of the Mentoring Programs (for those not familiar with how the programs work) and a list of the Goals and Objectives of the Aldine Mentoring Program. One of the most interesting outcomes of the programs is the impact the participation requirements have on academic achievement. Thus, to better elucidate the impact on achievement, the article analyzes several key "at risk" factors, comparing the results of the mentees to that of the general school population. Finally, in support of our conjecture that there is a relationship between program requirements and achievement, we end the article with some very telling "testimonials" from some of the young ladies that are either currently members of the program or are alumni members.
