LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to each of you that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. I have talked to many members that have taken care of evacuees and volunteered in the efforts here in Houston. Many of our members have had extra work responsibilities as a result of the efforts. I am proud of each person and company that has given so much of his or her time.

I would like to thank The Hallmark, Ben E. Keith Foods, Spec's, The Houston Astros, and Amegy Bank for supporting the Summer Serenade. The music by Shannon Perry and the Ideal Strings was beautiful and the food was great. Thank each of you for attending and especially Beverly Kaufman for her assistance. The proceeds will go to publishing a new brochure.

The Reunion Dinner for past and new Women on the Move® was held at the Sam Houston Hotel (re-named the Alden). Margo Snider planned a wonderful evening and the Hotel underwrote part of the event. I was pleased to meet the new Women on the Move® as well as past honorees. Former mentored students and one student at Westbury High School spoke about the benefits of the mentoring programs. They are great examples of the success of our programs. A special thank you to Beth Ann Scher for making the arrangements for the students to attend.

We need more news about the members. Forward any news about you or other members to Cay Dickson at ocayd@ocay.com . Please fill out the member survey and return to Mary Ann Collier. We need your input to plan for the future of TEW.

The Women on the Move® Luncheon will be October 20, 2005, at the Intercontinental Hotel. We have great honorees. Margo Snider and committee are working very hard to make another very successful event. We hope that you will respond and purchase tickets and tables.

The mentoring programs have started. If you want to become involved, please contact Beth Ann Scher at scherstv@pdg.net . .

We will be selling tickets for the beautiful gift basket at the monthly meeting, and the Women on the Move Luncheon®. The price for the tickets is $5.00 for one or $20.00 for five.

Remember that the member that brings the most guests to the monthly meetings will receive a free membership for 2006. Be sure and use the TEW cards for Randalls and Kroger when you shop. We receive funds that go to the scholarship fund.

“Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you.” Cynthia Kersey.

President

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS

Florence Kusnetz is included in a new book,
The Women of CourtWatch: Reforming a Corrupt Family Court System. It was written by Carole Bell Ford. The book covers Florence's biography and the years she spent in law school, and her twenty years of practicing law, and trying to bring family mediation to Houston.  But it also tells the compelling story of the corruption of the Houston family courts and her part in the efforts to clean them up.  You can read about it and order it if you care to by going to:  www.utexas.edu/utpress/books/forwom.html
