LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, Today is March 21, the first day of spring, hallelujah! So as the old adage goes, spring is in the air, AND change is in the air for TEW. I am just bursting at the seams to let all of you know that the change I am talking about is that TEW IS GROWING. How appropriate that our growth is occurring during this particular season. You never know how far reaching your message is. Karen Smith and Pamela Stein contacted us in January about expanding TEW to the north. Karen is the managing partner in a law firm in The Woodlands and Pam is an administrator in her firm. Both attended the 2005 Women on the Move® Luncheon and were so impressed with the event and TEW that they expressed a great interest in organizing a TEW satellite group to include Greenspoint, The Woodlands, and as far north at Conroe. They know many dynamic women in the area whose membership in TEW would be a definite asset. Additionally, they would like to develop a mentoring program in the Conroe ISD. After a very productive meeting with Karen and Pam, as well as board discussion, we agreed to proceed with this new endeavor. We have a lot of work to do over the spring and summer, but feel that this is a very worthwhile project. So stay tuned for more information and progress reports during the upcoming months. We are so pleased and excited about this new opportunity for them and for us! One project that has been completed, though is the archiving of TEW's records. This was no small undertaking and many thanks to Linda Holt for organizing the project and to Sheila Manning for our safety deposit box. Our records and important documents are now safely stored and cataloged. This is indeed a busy time for us. President Elect Beverly Kaufman is organizing her scholarship committee and we are about to meet and award scholarships in the amount of $25,000 to the students in our mentoring programs: Career Women of the Future at Westbury and Ladies of Excellence at Aldine. This is always such a rewarding experience to know that we are assisting these young ladies in pursuing their education. The Career tours for both programs are ongoing through the first week of May. This is always one of the highlights of the year for the girls, remember, we always need members to help out by representing TEW on the tours. Contact Linda (Aldine) or Carolyn (Westbury) if you have some time to give to the programs. CONGRATULATIONS, BONNIE! Bonnie Berube, Past President, has been selected as our 2006 Women of Excellence. This gala event sponsored by The Federation of Houston Professional Women will be held on Saturday, September 16 at the Hyatt Regency. More information will be forthcoming on attending the event. And now, just a friendly reminder . . . PLEASE remember to make your reservations to the monthly meetings by noon on the Friday preceding the Tuesday meeting. The Briar Club is closed on Monday so Jeann must give the head count to them on that Friday. We had a fantastic meeting last month with a great turnout and we were so glad to see everyone; however, 10 people showed up without reservations. In the past this was not really a problem, but now that we are having a served meal, we want to be sure the Briar Club has prepared enough food for everyone. So be sure to RSVP and look for all the news on the April meeting in this issue of The Networker. As you can see, now is a fantastic time to be a TEW member!Barbara P.S. - We thought you might like to see the smiling faces of the 2006 TEW Board Members, so with that in mind, click here: Board Members |

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS
Beth Wolff (WOM 1989) decided she wanted to do something special for Women's History Month. So she selected three deserving women to honor, planned a brunch at her own home and invited 60 other leading ladies of the corporate, philanthropic and political worlds. Among the honored was Jackie Martin (WOM 1995) and a great friend to TEW, Houston Chronicle Associate Editor Susan Bishoff. Joining the party were Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia (WOM 1993) and Rebecca McDonald (WOM 1995). Sharon Owens (WOM 1995) was all smiles at “A Knock Out Affair” honoring George Foreman where 400 people raised $100,000 for the Prince Complex programs. Sara Speer Selber (WOM 1999) is being honored Monday, May 8, 2006 with the Max H. Nathan Award by the American Jewish Committee for her community work with the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. The Award is for the courage she had to build community bridges, as she put aside differences and put people first. Louella Hundt has a new line of clothing called the Worth Collection, Ltd. , being shown at the Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood annual donor luncheon April 4, 2006. The show is entitled “You are Worth It”. Diane Finch actually took a "real girls only" vacation last week, beaching it in Cancun. Sounds like the kind of Spring Break we all could use. |

UPCOMING MEETING MEMOThe Briar Club VERY IMPORTANT: April 11 - Irene V. Guenther - Dr. Guenther is presently Visiting Professor of History at Rice University, where she teaches courses on 20 th century genocides and on women and war. In the fall of 2006, she will be joining the History Department faculty at Marquette University, where she will teach in the Modern European Studies graduate program. Since she began teaching nine years ago, she has won six teaching awards, including awards at the community college, university, and national levels. Because of the difficulties she encountered returning to school as a single parent, Dr. Guenther established two Women's Centers, one at the University of Houston and the other at Houston Community College Northwest. Both centers provide tutoring, scholarships, and faculty mentoring to facilitate the academic success of non-traditional female students. Dr. Guenther's book, Nazi “Chic”? Fashioning Women in the Third Reich, explores the unsuccessful attempt by the Nazi state to construct a female appearance that would both mirror official gender ideology and support plans for a Nazi-dominated European fashion industry. Fashion, therefore, serves as a window into a number of important social, cultural, and economic issues. It illuminates the ambiguous relationship between German women and the Nazi Party, as it details transformations in female appearance, image, and consumption. Learn more about her book at www.nazichic.cc RSVP ASAP to Jeann Howse 713-664-3777 May 9 - a book review on "You're Wearing That?" - focusing on relationships, especially with the younger generation. We encourage you to bring a young woman to the meeting. | |||||||||||||||||
