LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings to All:

Can you believe it? This year is half over which means we are in the middle of the TEW year and things are really popping. Read further in this month's Networker to find out what is happening this month.

For just a preview –

Our new satellite group, Texas Executive Women-North (TEWN) will have their first meeting on June 13. Margo Snider, Carolyn Wyly and I will travel to the Woodlands to attend their inaugural fete and to welcome everyone to TEW. One thing that may need to be clarified, though, is the fact that TEWN is not a chapter of TEW. It is an extension of TEW which we are calling a satellite. We are very much looking forward to their participation in Women on the Move® and becoming a part of us, the “original TEW.”

Additionally, I want to welcome Karen Smith, a partner with Drucker, Rutledge & Smith to the Board. As the Director of TEWN she will serve on the Board as a Director-at-Large.

Speaking of “us”, one of “us” is "going west” this month. We will sadly bid a fond farewell to Louella Hundt as she undertakes a move to sunny California to join her husband, who is with an international engineering firm there. Louella has been an active member and an integral part of the TEW Board for the last 18 months, this year serving as Membership VP. We will all miss her, but she assures us she will be back to visit.

Beth Ann Scher will be filling Louella's position on the Board with the able help of Director-at-Large Mamie Moy. So we know that membership is in good hands as we continue to welcome new members to TEW. Look for our new member's profiles in this issue.

Seven new members have joined TEW so far this year (and it is only half over). We are only three away from our goal of ten new members which may very well be surpassed. Don't forget that the member who has the most guests join TEW this year will win a year's free membership.

Also, the selection process for the recipients of the Thelma Marlowe/Texas Executive Women Scholarship at the University of Houston Bauer School of Business will begin this month. President-Elect Beverly Kaufman will be heading up the committee that will interview five prospective women and then ultimately select the recipient or recipients.

It is interesting to note that the scholarship was established in 1987 with only an initial deposit of $1,750. Today the scholarship is endowed, the book value is $66,839.00 and the amount of scholarships awarded to date is $35,550. Once this year's award is made, that will bring the total to nearly $40,000. Thelma Marlowe was a long-time member and former president of TEW, whom we unfortunately lost to breast cancer in 1995. Thelma was instrumental in establishing the scholarship, as well as The Greater Houston Area Women's Foundation, now the Women's Resource. To honor her memory, her name was included in the scholarship.

As we just celebrated Memorial Day and while I am on the subject of memorial scholarships, please consider a donation to either scholarship fund or creating a memorial scholarship in honor of a loved one. The young women that we mentor and assist with their education would be able to benfefit from a lasting tribute to those you would wish to memorialize. There currently is one memorial scholarship and it may be a little-known fact that TEW makes a donation to the scholarship fund that benefits the mentoring programs in the name of our members who have lost an immediate family member.

Moving on to what else is happening this month – On June 12 we begin the screening process for our Women on the Move® honorees and the interview process will start on June 20 with Maureen Sanders heading up the Selection Committee.

The deadline for applications was May 31 and I know that another 10 well- deserving and well-qualified women will be chosen as 2006 Women on the Move®, thus making our annual fundraiser another huge success. To support Women on the Move this year, we would love to have you purchase a table. It's a great way to introduce business associates and friends to Women on the Move® and TEW. Or alternatively, to donate a table or tickets so that the girls in our three mentoring programs may attend. This is always a highlight of the program year for them. The event is Friday, November 17 at the Intercontinental Hotel.

Our annual Member Social will be on July 11 and now is the perfect time to plan to attend. Beth Williams, Social Events VP, is organizing a wonderful, whimsical evening of food and fun. More info is in the newsletter and be sure to look for your invitation via the mail and email.

Debuting this month in The Networker is a new monthly feature. Book reviews, dates for book signings, and recommendations for a good read will be offered from the folks at River Oaks Book Store. So check it out, summer is almost upon us and you'll want to get that book list ready for your summer reading.

Now lastly, but certainly not least, the June 13 meeting will be one you definitely won't want to miss. Jolanda Jones, attorney and 2004 Women on the Move® honoree, will be our guest speaker. Jolanda appeared on “Survivor “ in 2004. She is a dynamic speaker and I'm sure will keep you captivated highlighting some of her awesome experiences while on the show.

So, as you can see, June, for TEW is chock full of goings-on, you won't want to miss out on any of it.

Barbara

President

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS

Maureen Sanders was among the crowd of 400 at the opening of the Pink Ribbon House in Tanglewood, benefiting breast cancer research at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dress for Success's, Nancy Levicki (WOM 2005) and Houston Area Women's Center's, Ellen Cohen (WOM 1989) are working to help women make a fresh start. The non-profit organizations had a wonderful article in the Houston Chronicle under the title “Shop Girl”, discussing the merits of each organization and how they are taking clothing donations.

Marilyn Oshman (WOM 1994) is immersed in the world of art. This month alone, as a founder of the Orange Show, she oversaw this year's outstanding Art Car Parade, where Beth Ann Scher and Sheridan Scott were seated in the shade cheering each of the 260 decorated cars. But mostly she was in the news for selling her original self portrait by Freda Kahlo entitled “Roots” for a record setting amount paid for any Latin American artist.

Speaking of the art world, Dancie Ware (WOM 1986) was at the early party before the opening of the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin

Linda Addison (WOM 2002) has been given another honor. At the fourth annual Women's Initiative Appreciation Luncheon, the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, she was named Woman of the Year. The Women's Initiative aims to increase participation for women professionals, business owners, and volunteers on the work of the United Way .

Susan Myers (WOM 2005) of the Holocaust Museum Houston, presented the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award to Sir Bob Geldof. Sharing the spotlight was dinner chair Linda Addison (WOM 2002).

Sharon Michael Owens (WOM 1995) was honored among the top 25 graduates of Leadership Houston at the 25 th anniversary gala held at the InterContinental Hotel Houston.

Dorothy Weston-Gibbons (WOM 2002) was a speaker at the Avon Breast Fund National Conference, held in Torrance, California, May 7-10.  On May 4th, The Rose hosted the 2006 Greater Houston Breast Health Summit, led by Dorothy.  The Summit was co-hosted by The Rose and the Houston Affiliate of the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. There were 140 physicians, healthcare
professionals and social workers attending and they have formed the Houston
Breast Cancer Collaborative. Dorothy will also speak and present two abstracts about breast cancer treatment and programs at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Mission Conference, in Washington DC this June.

June 13 - Jolanda Jones. You will not want to miss a minute of this meeting. Just to give you a taste: Jolanda is an attorney in Houston. She is also a survivor - literally - on many levels.

Jolanda Jones speaks at TEWShe survived a tumultuous childhood. Her dad committed suicide with her in the room with her mom physically and psychologically. Her family often went without electricity, water or heat. They were constantly evicted. Two of her uncles committed suicide, her aunt was murdered, and various members of her family are in prison and on welfare. She is a survivor of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband – the father of her child.

She graduated high school and college Magna Cum Laude and was an All-American in both track & field and basketball. She is the only person, male or female, to win the Texas State 5A Team Championship as an individual.

She is dedicated to standing up for the poor and disenfranchised. The common theme of her legal practice is: her clients are Davids who always fight Goliaths.

As a bonus, this survivor actually was on the television program of the same name. She'll tell you about that, and much more, at the meeting.
