LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Beverly Kaufman

December President's Message

Happy Holidays to all TEW members! We've had a great time together in 2007 and achieved much in the process. Thanks to each of you for the privilege of serving as President, with special appreciation to the members of the Board of Directors for their support and hard work on behalf of our beloved organization. It has been a team with whom anyone would be most proud to work. And we appreciated the support for the new officers nominated for the coming term. They will bring their ideas and energy to the table to keep our momentum rolling.

We can all share in the pride of our accomplishments through our mentoring programs and our Women on the Move® Event honoring outstanding women in our community. This year's luncheon raised a net profit in the neighborhood of $90,000 and these funds will assure our ability to provide more and better scholarships in 2008 and keep those programs running. Accolades to Chair Margo Snider and all who contributed to the success of the event.

Our Program Chair Mamie Moy has done yeoman service in providing varied and fascinating speakers for all our meetings. Our Social Chair Sheridan Scott has ably planned our fun times together as well as opened her home monthly for board meetings. Director at Large Argentina James has generously contributed to our success through Port of Houston contributions and our summer social aboard the Sam Houston.

Genora Boykins has been the most faithful of Membership Chairs and we are fortunate she will remain on the BOD. Theresa Chang has been a conscientious steward of our mentoring programs. Bonnie Berube has been diligent in security communications opportunities promoting TEW. And Sheila Manning and Paula Bohls have brought professional skills to their posts as treasurer and secretary.

Scholarship Chair Carolyn Wyly has handled that challenging assignment with flying colors, and TEW will have a wonderful leader in Carolyn as she assumes the Presidency.

We are in capable hands.

Beverly Kaufman

President

TEW MENTORING PROGRAM

Mentoring

The scholarship committee of Theresa Chang, Mamie Moy and Carolyn Wyly met with applicants for the TEW scholarships at the UH Bauer College of Business on October 23 and were pleased to select Margarita Turrubiate, Ann Nguyen and Stacey Phillips as the awardees for this year. All are Senior Finance majors, and are outstanding and deserving young women from whom we will be hearing great things in the future.

Stacey writes in her thank you note that “this award will allow me to free up some funds to start accruing a professional wardrobe for my career, which I am in need of.  As you know, the way we show ourselves in our physical appearance is a reflection of our character. Now I will be able to show on the outside what I am on the inside”  Anh writes she is “honored to be a part of a program that is dedicated to helping future generations of women and girls succeed and give back to the committee.”

We will have these young ladies as our guests at a future TEW meeting so that you may have the opportunity to meet them.

- Carolyn Wyly

Linda Holt offers a touching letter from a mentee nominating a Campus Mentor for Mentor of The Year. You can read it here and get an idea of the importance of this program in the lives of the young women.

Learn more about the programs from the 2006 Mentoring Video. You will gain a true perspective of what the program is about and how it has affected the lives of so many young women.

VP Programs Report

We heard Georgianna Nichols' journey and retirement from CenterPoint Energy at the November 13 meeting. We will miss her, but she promised to stay in contact.

Sheridan Scott is planning an outstanding Holiday party. Contact her now with your reservation. This event is always a highlight of the holiday season.

January 8, 2008, meeting is not yet finalized, but keep this date open for the first 2008 TEW meeting. A great way to begin the year by meeting Board Members who will appreciate your support.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support, patience and cooperation. The electronic method of sending meeting announcements has been more efficient than the US postal system. Cost of postage and supplies was negative to none. Also, less time was spent in getting the announcements out. Please keep us (Linda Holt - lshtew@aol.com and Geraldine Gill - ggill@thecurrentevent.com ) current with your email address. Please put TEW in your friendly email box. This will assure your receiving all TEW information.

If you prefer receiving hard copy, please let Geraldine know.

Look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Party on December 13.

If your email address changes, please send new address to ggill@thecurrentevent.com. Electronic communication has been quite effective for sending information about TEW programs.
