LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
March President's Message: Because I was raised as a farmer's daughter, Spring has a particularly agrarian significance to me. While we celebrate the Easter holiday as a symbol of spiritual renewal, we also welcome the season of cultivating the soil and planting seeds for development of plants to feed our bodies and gratify our souls. Similarly, work in Texas Executive Women is about cultivating young lives and nurturing their development as successful, productive adults. The satisfaction derived from touching the lives of future leaders and influencing their career paths, feeds our souls as well. And this is the time of year when we achieve fruition of the time and resources committed to our mentoring programs. We are entering the counting down days to scholarship applications and recipient selection. All our work to honor outstanding women as examples for the community, our members and our mentees; to provide career choice support through programs and tours; and to raise the vital funds to finance these efforts is coming to the end of another cycle and a new beginning for the next. Unlike the farmer who reaps the harvest in the Fall, our crop graduates in the Spring and blooms on in the coming year. Of course our Women on the Move® Luncheon, scheduled for October 19, is also the time we reap the contributions needed to fertilize our dreams. As for me, while I contemplate the symbolism of our organization's contributions, I'm also going to be feeding my lawn and planting caladium bulbs in March, while setting out some bedding plants. And working in TEW will assure the whole year is a blooming good time! Beverly Kaufman

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS
This is a reminder that we are always looking for TEW Member news. Tell us what you're doing, what your company is doing or what other TEW members are doing. This is the place to toot your own horn. Your response is always welcome. Just send any information or news about yourself or any other member to Mamie Moy at mmoy@mail.uh.edu. In the latest University of Houston Magazine , Mamie Moy (WOM 2001) was recognized as a Phenomenal Professor after 54 years of teaching chemistry to students, children and the community. In the same magazine, Marcy Kurtz, Crystal Brown, and Eva Guzman, all U of H graduates, were listed as 2006 Women on the Move. Also listed was Sonny Messiah Jiles (WOM 1990) celebrating the Houston Defender's 75th Anniversary and her 25 years as publisher. Jacqueline Baly Calumette (WOM 2004 ) was named 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Women's Business Initiative organization. It was also announced that Pauline Higgins (WOM 2005) was named partner and chief diversity officer for Thompson and Knight LLP. It looks like members of TEW take great pride in support of the U of H. TEW MENTORING PROGRAM
From Bonnie Berube, TEW Members: We have great mentoring and scholarship programs. The success we have with the students needs to be told. I would like to request that each of you forward a name to me of a contact person within your organization. The contact is responsible for allocating funds for scholarships, assistance to students, sponsorships, or any other area that might benefit our mentoring programs. I want to contact these individuals and tell them about the programs and provide them with a copy of the new mentoring DVD, the new brochure, and hopefully set up an appointment to discuss the programs in person. If you know anyone in any other corporation or group that might assist, that would be great also. Please forward any information to me blb1@earthlink,net or bberube@blbconsulting.com . The phone number is (713) 785-6481. From Linda Holt... Keep up with what's going on in the mentoring programs: 2007 Ladies of Distinction Programs 2006-2007 Career Women of the Future Programs See the 2006 Mentoring Video. You will gain a true perspective of what the program is about and how it has affected the lives of so many young women. |
