LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Beverly Kaufman

September President's Message:

In anticipation of our September 11 monthly meeting, I hope you’ll use the holiday weekend to do a little early Fall closet cleaning and select some appropriate suits to donate to Dress for Success. Please bring them cleaned, bagged and on hangers to the meeting. We’ll deliver all the donations direct to the drop site the next day. What a feel-good project for TEW members! One small act of generosity could literally lead to the future success of another woman. We hope to have a good turnout for the meeting and a rack filled with business clothes.

At our Board of Directors meeting this week, it was good hearing about all the plans underway for the new school year and the coming mentoring programs. There are speakers and career tours already scheduled that will provide inspiration for our young ladies. And we know your enthusiastic support for the Women on the Move Luncheon® will assure funding for those programs and the scholarship fund. We hope to have strong member participation through sponsor table sales that will guarantee a sold-out, packed house on October 19th. And it’s always an excellent opportunity to meet many of those young ladies who attend the event and go away with a deep sense of appreciation for what we are all about. See you in September!

Beverly Kaufman

President

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS

Dorothy Weston-Gibbons (WOM 2002), The Rose Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, has been nominated for both the local award and the "Your Better World" award.

"Stand On A Better World" http://www.standonabetterworld.com is an organization of women celebrating women who "do the right thing" to make a difference in the lives of people and communities locally as well as globally. Mannington Mills, the leading manufacturer of flooring, located in Northeast U.S., started the foundation.

Dorothy is a finalist in both categories among  ONLY 30 women in the entire nation. Each award comes with a $10,000 cash prize. If she wins both, that's $20,000 for The Rose. If she wins either or both, she is then automatically eligible for the $25,000 grand prize. The "Your Better World" award and the grand prize are decided by a panel of judges that includes tennis legend Billie Jean King and Deborah Roberts of ABC 20/20.

The local award is decided by public VOTES at this site: http://www.standonabetterworld.com. This ties it more effectively to the community in which the nominee is making a difference. Voting opened August 15th and closes Friday, September 7th. Go vote for Dorothy!

Jacqueline (Jacquie) Baly Chaumette (WOM 2004) is running for Sugar Land's City Council At-Large Position 2, after learning that Councilman Daniel Wong will not seek re-election. There will be a fundraiser for Jacquie on Tuesday, September 18th, 7:30 am, at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce
