LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Now that we have finished the last of the hard-boiled eggs and the
chocolate bunnies, we can get back to the business of TEW. For me and many
others at this time of years that is volunteering for career tours. Though
you may hear us mumbling from time to time we will never do it again, that
never lasts to the next year.
I personally escorted young ladies
from Westbury High School to Memorial Hermann Southwest for an opportunity
to observe pharmacists at work in the hospital setting. Prior to the tour
the girls informed me the only pharmacy path they were award of was in the
retail arena, such as Walgreen's or CVS. Brenda Marshall, Director of
Memorial Hermann Southwest Pharmacy and her staff provided a real eye
opener to the girls, they left there amazed at the responsibility
pharmacists have and the dangers if they make a mistake. We can thank TEW
member Lou Cuellar for setting up both this tour and one for the Aldine
girls to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.
The following day, I
can't believe I did this to myself, I escorted both Aldine and Westbury
girls to Houston Community College Fashion Dept. Suzette Brimmer, Dept
Chair took the girls into in-session classes where they able to interact
with the students. I know at least one Westbury Senior who made up her
mind that day the program was what she wanted. I was blown away with the
state-of-the-art equipment; can you believe computers that make patterns
for your body and to your specifications? If you haven't noticed yet, the
70's are back, the fabrics certainly reflect that. Shades of polyester!
It is such a joy to see our young women light up when they click
with a career choice. I would hope that all of you could experience the
satisfaction from years of efforts finally coming to fruition. Know that
however you participate in TEW is appreciated. I hope to see you at our
next meeting on April 8. By then we should all have shed our winter colors
and donned the spring ones.
There are photos of our young ladies
on career tours in the mentoring section of this newsletter, check them
out.

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS
Marlene Rubin was our
Westbury High School mentor for many years before she moved to Bellaire
High School . Please read the note we received from her recently: "My husband, Bob, was diagnosed with brain cancer this
past November. I would like to honor him by helping to raise money
for brain cancer research. Bob and I are participating in
Run for the Rose at the Reliant Stadium
on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at 8am. The Run
for the Rose is a 5K Fun Run/Walk with a 1K Family Run/Walk.
Run
for the Rose was established in memory of Dr. Marnie Rose and has the dual
mission of eradicating brain cancer through the funding of research at The
University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and providing for the
betterment of lives of the young patients at Children's Memorial Hermann
Hospital who were so dear to Marnie's heart.
Your support can make
such a difference to so many. An estimated $5-$10 of federal funding is
generated from each $1 provided by donors. Donations literally are
extending, if not saving, people's lives; people who virtually had no
hope!
See you at the starting line on April 6th!
Love, Marlene "
Dorothy Weston Gibbons, co-founder and CEO
of The Rose was interviewed in the March 18 Houston Chronicle Business section regarding a
new piece of equipment obtained by the organization. The SomoVu is used
for screening for breast cancer among younger women who are, according to
Dorothy, a growing underserved population at risk for breast cancer.
